CBT Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that can help you understand how your thoughts and judgements about yourself and the world around you affects how you feel.
We all have a little voice inside our heads providing a running commentary on our lives; it curses when we break a cup, it comments on the reflection in the mirror, it passes judgement on our driving. This inner voice has a powerful effect on how we feel about ourselves and how we perceive the world around us.
Sometimes it seems the voice only knows how to criticise;’ you clumsy twit!’, ‘you’re looking fat today’, ‘ How dare you cut me up like that!’
Frequent comments like these can erode our self esteem, or make us chronically angry, cynical and depressed. And yet, we often tolerate the kind of harsh, cruel, untruthful or destructive comments from our own inner voice that we would never put up with from others.
CBT uses carefully structured questions to help you check whether your inner voice is fair and truthful or whether it is harsh, pessimistic or just plain wrong; CBT can then work with you to find a comfortable way to change that inner voice to less being critical and more able to see that the glass is also half full...
